Elephant Brakes by Rietschoten also offers the complete range as fully explosion-proof versions, even complying with Category 2 of the ATEX 94/9/EC product guidelines.

The name ATEX represents the legislative basis for the regulation of explosion protection measures within Europe, which has been binding since July 1, 2003. This guideline has also defined the fundamental safety requirements for non-electrical devices such as mechanical friction brakes since then. Dangers exist wherever flammable gases, liquids, vapors, or dusts are produced, handled, stored, or transported and can constitute an explosive mixture if they come into contact with oxygen.

We were one of the very first brake manufacturers to offer Category 2 brakes. This means that brakes must have a high degree of safety because explosive atmospheres can arise more often.

Brake calipers are divided into the following classes:

-          EX II 2 D c T1…T6

-          EX II 2 G c T1...T6

In contrast to equipment whose design inherently creates a certain operating temperature, the temperature class (T1–T6) of a mechanical friction brake depends upon the parameters of its application. Conformity with ATEX is only affirmed by the quality of the T544 friction pad used together with its GGG 40 counter material.

All brake calipers come equipped with a special monitoring unit including a switching amplifier that enables the monitoring of the brake lever; the switching amplifier is installed in a secure area. On top of this, an abrasion sensor wire loop circuit is also inserted into the brake pads on each brake lever side. This signal is also incorporated in the switching amplifier. For the defined alignment of the brake lever, the brake calipers are also equipped with a mounting kit that depends on the installation position.

Due to our modular construction system, we can create the optimal braking equipment for every customer.
