Brakes and Turning Gear for MARS Tankers of the Royal Navy

The largest order for Rietschoten to date goes to the sea.

Deutsche van Rietschoten & Houwens GmbH has been completed the largest order in its corporate history to date and equipped four MARS tankers with brakes and turning gear. The last turning gear was delivered in August.

MARS (Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability) tankers are supply tankers. After they are completed, they will supply the ships of the Royal Navy with food, fuel, water, and other supplies.

The MARS tankers benefit from an advanced hybrid-drive technology. It is more fuel-efficient than the conventional standard systems available on the market.

The propellers of the 200m-long tankers have a diameter of 6.5m and rotate at a speed of 80rpm.

The brakes that are supplied by Deutsche van Rietschoten & Houwens GmbH are custom-made with only the cylinders coming from series production. Special projects in particular often require custom-made designs because the brakes need to be adapted to the existing conditions.

The MARS tankers are expected to be commissioned in early 2016.
